Matter-Antimatter Asymmetry in Nature

The LHCb experiment at the LHC at CERN is studying the decay of particles that contain a b-quark. Since the b-quark is one of the heavier quark types, many different interactions can be studied, and as such the Standard Model of particle physics is scrutinized in detail. The foundations of our understanding of elementary particles in the Standard Model are heavily based on symmetry arguments. The b-quark is particularly sensitive to probe the symmetries, not in the least the intriguing (a)symmetry between matter and antimatter in the laboratory and the universe. In this presentation the symmetries underlying the Standard Model will be reviewed, and the latest results on matter-antimatter differences will be shown.


Dr. N. Tuning graduated in 2001 on the inner structure of the proton, after which he moved to the LHCb experiment at CERN. Within the LHCb collaboration he fulfilled multiple roles, such as the coordinator of the operational aspects in 2017, 2018 and 2023, and as the final responsible for the scientific output between 2020 and 2022. He has been a lecturer at the UvA/VU and the TUD.
